Matthew Bissell

Financial Consultant

Matthew Bissell’s life and career reflect a steady progression shaped by education, hands-on work, and a commitment to supporting others. Over the years, he has taken on roles across social services, logistics, and financial consulting, developing practical skills through direct experience. Born in Oakland, California, in 1973, he continues to balance professional responsibilities with family life and personal interests.

Early Life and Family Background

Matthew was born on November 20, 1973, at Oakland Kaiser Hospital in Oakland, California. He is the son of Peter and Nancy Bissell. His father, Peter Bissell, spent multiple decades working as a longshoreman in the Bay Area and was an active member of the ILWU. His mother, Nancy Bissell, followed a professional path that combined education and business ownership. She began her career as a Special Education Teacher and later opened and managed a local clothing store.

Matthew was raised alongside one sister in a household that emphasized responsibility and family support. Much of his childhood was spent socializing with friends and participating in organized sports. Growing up in the Bay Area allowed him to play football, baseball, and soccer year-round. These early experiences helped him understand teamwork, structure, and commitment, qualities that later became part of his professional approach.

Education and Academic Development

Matthew attended Pitzer College in Claremont, California, from 1991 to 1995, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. While completing his studies, he was also a student-athlete, competing on the Pomona/Pitzer baseball and football teams. In 1994, he earned First Team All-SCIAC honors in football, contributing as a defensive end, punter, and placekicker.

Balancing academic coursework with athletic commitments required discipline and strong time management. Matthew has noted that being a student-athlete helped him learn how to work through mental challenges while managing a demanding schedule. These lessons later carried over into both his professional and personal life.

In 1994, Matthew spent a semester abroad at the University of Sussex in Brighton, England. During that time, he traveled across Europe, Africa, and Asia, visiting Spain, Morocco, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Romania, Germany, and the Netherlands. Exposure to different cultures and social systems expanded his perspective and introduced him to new ways of thinking. After completing his undergraduate degree, he continued his academic development with additional coursework at Saint Mary’s College in Moraga, California.

Early Career Experiences

Matthew’s early professional experiences span a wide range of industries and responsibilities. He worked in apparel sales, where he developed customer service skills and gained exposure to retail operations. He also worked as a gardener and landscaper, roles that required physical effort, consistency, and attention to detail.

Additional roles included waiter, truck driver trainer, and delivery driver for both FedEx and UPS. These positions required punctuality, organization, and reliability. Matthew also worked as a travel agent, caregiver, and social worker. Each of these roles involved planning, communication, and problem-solving, often while working directly with individuals who needed dependable support.

Through this variety of work, Matthew developed adaptability and a practical understanding of how to manage responsibilities in different environments. His experience across industries helped him build confidence in handling new challenges.

In this role, he assists clients with activities of daily living, including meal preparation, exercise routines, and medication management. He also communicates regularly with family members to ensure coordinated care and ongoing support.
